What does a ductless heat pump cost?

We install Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps.

Mitsubishi heat pumps are quiet, energy efficient, and reliable - all at a fair price. Learn more about the Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps we install, or watch these short videos to understand the two categories of ductless heat pumps: single zone and multi-zone.

Single Zone Ductless Heat Pump

Multi-Zone Ductless Heat Pump

A single zone ductless heat pump typically costs between $4.5K and $6K, while a multi-zone ductless heat pump starts at about $7.5K. How much you end up paying depends, in part, on the location of your outdoor unit. The greater the distance between your outdoor unit and indoor unit - the more you’ll pay.

The reason is that copper (and other things) connect the outdoor unit and indoor unit. Copper is relatively expensive, so the more copper you need, the more you’ll pay for your ductless heat pump.

Ductless heat pump incentives

We have strong cash incentives for ductless heat pumps in Oregon. Please note that incentives are subject to change.

Energy Trust of Oregon

If you heat your home with electricity from PGE or Pacific Power, you can get a $500 cash incentive from the Energy Trust of Oregon. Follow the link to learn about limitations and limited time offers. For example, if you have a moderate income and qualify for the Savings within Reach program, you can get a cash incentive up to $1,000 for a ductless heat pump.

CEC and Midstate

If you live in Central Oregon and heat your home with electricity from CEC or Midstate, please visit our Bend ductless heat pump page.

How much energy does a ductless heat pump save?

The answer depends on how you currently heat your home. If you have resistance electric heating - like baseboard electric, cadet wall heaters, or an electric furnace - the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you’ll save about fifty percent on your heating bills.

How does a ductless heat pump operate so much more efficiently? Like your refrigerator, a ductless heat pump uses electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. Because it moves heat rather than generates heat, a ductless heat pump operates much more efficiently than a conventional electric heating system. When properly installed, a ductless heat pump can deliver one and a half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes.

How much to finance a ductless heat pump?

We work with a few different local lending partners to help our clients with competitive financing. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the estimated monthly payments, interest rates, and terms to install a single zone ductless heat pump in Portland or Bend, Oregon.

  • Selco: $36.98 (4.00%, 15-year term)

  • Craft3: $55.49 (5.99%, 10-year term for income qualified homeowners)

  • Banner Bank: $94.33 (4.99%, 5-year term)

To finance a ductless heat pump installation, you could work with one of our lending partners or go with another bank or credit union that you trust. Sara H. hired GreenSavers to install a ductless heat pump for her home in Bend, Oregon. She went with a single zone Mitsubishi ductless heat pump with HyperHeat technology.

A side note: Mitsubishi is the only ductless heat pump manufacturer with HyperHeat, which enables their heat pumps to operate at high efficiency even in extreme cold weather. The Mitsubishi heat pumps that we install operate at full capacity down to 5 degrees, then at a reduced efficiency down to -13 degrees.

So what was Sara’s experience? Here's what she had to say:

“It was so easy to work with GreenSavers! Our ductless heat pump works amazing for cooling down the house so far without inflating the electricity bill! And the HVAC tech was very informative and inclusive while installing the unit. Plus GreenSavers filled out all of the incentive paperwork to help me get more money back!” -Sara H.

The assumptions: Sara heated her home with resistance electric cadet wall heaters. In the wintertime, she paid around $350 a month for electricity. Because her household (married with one child) earned less than $83,945, she got a $1,000 cash incentive from the Energy Trust of Oregon’s Savings Within Reach program. She could also finance her project with a Craft3 (5.99%, 10-year term).

Here’s what her ductless heat pump costs and payback looked like:

  • Total Cost: $5,185

  • Cash Incentives: $1,000

  • Net Cost: $4,185

  • Monthly Loan Payment: $57.54

  • Estimated Annual Energy Savings: $875

  • Estimated Payback: Less than five years
