The Path to Net Zero Energy and Beyond

A net zero energy home produces as much energy as it consumes in a year. Going beyond net zero energy means producing more energy than your home consumes – enough to power an electric car or give back to the grid.

“It’ll Pay for Itself in the Long Term”

Our client Will M. hired GreenSavers to electrify his home and get his energy bills as close to zero as possible. We installed high efficiency Mitsubishi heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, rooftop solar, and more. Learn more about what the Beyond Net Zero package below.

Beyond Net Zero

We offer Beyond Net Zero as a set of projects modeled to deliver the most cost-effective energy savings for average homes in Portland and Central Oregon. You can start with one or two project to reduce your carbon footprint, or complete the full package to get as close to net zero as possible. Please give us a call if you have questions: (541) 330.8767.

NET ZERO HOME ENERGY AUDIT: It all starts with a full diagnostic assessment of how your home uses and loses energy. We then model the optimal set of home energy upgrades to zero out your energy bills. Our modeling leverages beOPT or Building Energy Optimization Tool created by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory with simulation technology from the U.S. Department of Energy.

MITSUBISHI HEAT PUMP: If you have a gas burning furnace, we’ll replace it with a high efficiency electric heat pump. A Mitsubishi ducted heat pump would use your existing ducts to heat and cool the entire home. A ductless heat pump from Mitsubishi could be used to condition a single room or area.

HEAT PUMP WATER HEATER: Your water heater matters more than you might think. ENERGY STAR estimates that a family of four would save an average of $300 when replacing a resistance electric water heater with a heat pump water heater.

INSULATION: We seal air leaks, then fully insulate the exterior of the home. To reach net zero energy, we go beyond building codes with attic insulation (R60), wall insulation (R15), and floor insulation (R30). As much as possible, we use environmentally-responsible insulation materials that perform well and have minimal environmental impact.

MILGARD WINDOWS: Most clients go with double-pane Milgard windows enhanced with a 4th surface treatment to achieve triple pane performance. Milgard windows come with a lifetime guarantee and have been produced here in the Pacific Northwest for more than 50-years.

SOLAR PANELS: Zeroing out your energy bills involves a combination of energy saving upgrades and renewable energy generation. For most homeowners in Portland and Central Oregon, this means adding a minimum 6 kW rooftop solar array.

With Beyond Net Zero, most homes will not achieve net zero energy - at least until community solar becomes widely available - but every homeowner can get on the path to net zero. Schedule a Net Zero Home Energy Audit, or call to get started: (541) 330.8767.
