ATTIC INSULATION
“One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic." - US Department of Energy. We typically insulate attic floors with blown-in cellulose insulation, producing R-50 at a depth of 16 inches.
We also insulate attic kneewalls with fiberglass batts and wrap with a Tyvek air barrier. If you'd like to use the floor of your attic for storage, we can either build a platform above the blown-in cellulose or, as an alternative to cellulose, install rigid foam board insulation on the attic slopes.
WALL INSULATION
In a home without wall insulation, about 35% of heat loss occurs through wall cavities. As recommended by the US Department of Energy, we insulate walls with dense-pack cellulose insulation, typically installed from the exterior without any alteration to the appearance of the home.
Our process:
Remove sections of siding.
Drill into the sheathing and dense pack each cavity to R-15.
Plug holes, reinstall siding, and touch up paint. Adding wall insulation is your single biggest opportunity to improve the comfort and efficiency of your home.
FLOOR INSULATION
If you have a crawlspace, it is critical to insulate the ceiling of the crawlspace - ensuring that the insulation does not sag or droop - and install a vapor barrier on the ground. An effective vapor barrier slows the growth of mold and mildew.
According to David Hales at Washington State University, about 40% of the air we breath at home originates in the crawlspace. If you have a full basement, the best approach is to add insulation to your rim joist, which is the area around the perimeter of your home where it sits on the foundation.
To insulate a rim joist, we typically recommend rigid foam board insulation, which has the highest insulation value per square inch and serves as an effective air barrier.
