Ductless heat pump: The most energy efficient HVAC system

A ductless heat pump, also known as a ductless mini-split or mini-split heat pump, saves up to 40% on energy bills compared to a traditional system. The gains in efficiency and comfort make ductless systems an easy choice in Portland and Bend.

In Bend, we often find electrically heated homes with a kitchen and living room at one end and bedrooms at the other. By positioning a single-head ductless heat pump near the living room and kitchen, we're able to meet about 80% of the home's heating and cooling load. The boost in efficiency makes a ductless heat pump a common sense solution in Bend.

Portland homes often have a converted upper floor that never seems to cool down in the summer or heat up as well as the first floor in the winter. We've found that a ductless heat pump is by far the best way to efficiently heat and cool these upstairs living spaces. The most common system installed is a single-zone Mitsubishi ductless heat pump. Check out the short video from Mitsubishi about how a single-zone ductless heat pump works

Cooling solutions: Air conditioners and heat pumps

Air conditioning is becoming a necessity in the Pacific Northwest: 15 of the 16 hottest years on record have occurred since 2001. GreenSavers installs efficient air conditioners and heat pumps in Portland and Bend. By installing a high-performance system and taking other measures to improve energy efficiency, you can reduce your air conditioning bills by 20-40%.

Central air conditioners are more efficient than room air conditioners. They are out of the way, quiet, and convenient to operate. To save energy and money, consider installing an efficient system with GreenSavers. In a typical US home, air conditioning consumes more than 2,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, causing power plants to emit about 3,500 pounds of carbon dioxide and 31 pounds of sulfur dioxide.

Proper sizing and installation are critical to the energy efficiency of your air conditioner. Too large a unit will not adequately remove humidity. Too small a unit will not deliver a comfortable temperature on the hottest days. Improper unit location, lack of insulation, and leaky ductwork will also greatly hinder the performance of your system.

Heat pumps offer an energy efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances.

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a metric used to measure how much cooling an air conditioner or heat pump produces for each unit of energy it consumes. In general, the higher the SEER, the higher the cost. However, the energy savings can return the higher initial investment several times during the life of the air conditioner or heat pump.

Energy efficient furnaces for Portland and Bend homes

Heating systems are complicated. When choosing a new furnace, be sure to connect with an experienced HVAC contractor that will properly size your furnace and guarantee the installation. Every GreenSavers client gets a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We stand by the performance of our heating systems and the quality of our work.

  1. Air sealing and insulation: Before installing a new furnace, you should make every effort to improve the energy efficiency of your home with air sealing and insulation. These energy improvements not only make your home more comfortable, they allow you to save money by purchasing a smaller furnace.
  2. Proper furnace sizing: A furnace must be sized properly and installed correctly by an experienced HVAC contractor.
  3. Variable speed blowers: There are two types of furnace blowers — variable-speed and the fixed-speed. Variable-speed blowers do exactly what the name suggests — vary the speed of the blower to distribute air more consistently, efficiently, and quietly than a fixed-speed blower.
  4. Installation quality: Not just anyone can or should install a heating system in your home. An improperly installed furnace will face performance issues, costing you more in repairs and lost efficiency.

If you install a furnace that is too large for your home, you will experience a condition called short-cycling: The furnace frequently cycles on and off, over-heating your home then cooling down below the set temperature. On the other hand, a furnace that is too small for your home will not produce enough heat to keep you comfortable on the coldest days.

A furnace’s efficiency is measured by annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE). AFUE is a measure of how efficient the furnace converts the energy in its fuel to heat over the course of a typical year. GreenSavers installs efficient furnaces with an AFUE of 96%. This means that 96% of the energy in the gas fuel becomes heat for the home; the other 4% escapes through the chimney and elsewhere.

Upgrading your furnace from an efficiency of 56% to 90% in an average Portland or Bend home will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year if you heat with gas, or 2.5 tons if you heat with oil.

GreenSavers installs high efficiency Rheem furnaces. We find that the Rheem Prestige Series 96% efficient gas furnace is a good fit for a majority of clients. Rheem delivers high performance at a fair price. And relative to other manufacturers of high performance furnaces, Rheem uses more robust components that last longer, saving you time and money.
