Case study: How to save 30% on energy bills with 0% interest in Bend, OR
Author: Bill Hoelzer / Read Time: Four Minutes
“We went all out. No more baseboards, no more sweating through the summer. It’s cheaper to live here and SO. MUCH. MORE. COMFORTABLE.” (Courtney H. in Bend, Oregon)
Courtney and Fletcher live in a mid-century home in Bend. Like lots of older houses in Central Oregon, it was originally outfitted with electric resistance baseboard heaters and had no air conditioning. Winters were uneven and expensive. Summers meant open windows and humming fans.
When it came time to upgrade, they didn’t want a quick fix - they wanted a long-term solution.
That’s when they reached out to GreenSavers. After a thorough consultation, they decided to install a high-performance Mitsubishi Hyper Heat pump and six new Milgard windows. The results? Lower bills, higher comfort, and better curb appeal.
If you have questions about your home, don’t hesitate to send us a message or call: (541) 330-8767. Since 2007, we’ve installed more than 5,000 heat pumps and other energy saving projects for homeowners in Bend and Portland, Oregon. Every project comes with a satisfaction guarantee.
Heating and cooling: Goodbye baseboards, hello heat pump
Before the project, Courtney and Fletcher’s home was heated entirely with baseboard and cadet heaters—an outdated, inefficient system that offered little control and no cooling. As Courtney put it, “They were either all the way on or all the way off.”
GreenSavers replaced the system with a three-zone Mitsubishi Hyper Heat pump, including:
One 4-way ceiling cassette in the living room
Two wall-mounted units in each of the bedrooms
A variable-speed outdoor condenser rated for extreme cold
This setup gives precise control and consistent temperatures across the home, even during sub-freezing nights in Bend. And with no AC before, the cooling has been a game changer. “It’s so much cooler in the summer - and warmer in the winter. Just better all around,” said Courtney.
Zoned comfort, all year long
With a three-zone system, Courtney and Fletcher can customize the temperature in different parts of the house. Want it cooler in the bedroom for better sleep? Done. Prefer it warmer in the living room where the family spends most of their time? No problem. Each zone operates independently for maximum comfort.
Plus, the Mitsubishi Hyper Heat system is built for Bend’s winters. While standard heat pumps start to lose performance around freezing, this system continues to deliver energy efficient heating down to 5°F with resistance electric heating as a backup during the rare times that temperatures dip below 5°F.
That means no more cold spots—and no backup heat needed on all but the coldest nights.
Energy savings: Down 30%—even in a colder winter
Thanks to the upgrade, Courtney and Fletcher are using less energy - and spending less money.
We compared their energy bills for the five months before and after the project (October through February):
Energy usage dropped by 30%
Bills dropped by nearly $200
Winter was colder than the year before, making the savings even more impressive
They’ve kept the receipts, too: “We looked at bills five months after the project. It’s not just more comfortable - our energy bills are substantially lower.”

Cost breakdown: Strong incentives, 0% interest financing
Here’s how the heat pump investment broke down for Courtney and Fletcher:
Costs and Incentives |
Amount |
---|---|
Total Installed Cost | $12,308.80 |
Energy Trust of Oregon Incentive | -$1,800 |
Federal Tax Credit (Claimed) | -$2,000 |
Final Net Cost | $8,508.80 |
Rather than pay everything upfront, they took advantage of Synchrony financing: 30% down and 18 months at 0% interest. “That made the project doable,” Courtney said. “We wanted to lock in the tax credit before anything changed.”
Windows: Energy-efficient upgrades with curb appeal and ROI
Courtney and Fletcher didn’t just want better efficiency—they wanted their home to look great too. They replaced six older windows with Milgard V300 Trinsic vinyl units featuring dual-pane Low-E glass, argon fill, and sleek black frames inside and out.
Cost: $4,408
Performance: U-factors as low as 0.24, helping keep heat in during winter and out during summer
Visual impact: The black-on-black frames gave their mid-century home a sharp, modern look
And the investment is expected to pay off. According to the latest Cost vs. Value Report, homeowners in the Pacific region recoup an average of 85.9% of the cost of vinyl window replacements at resale. That means these $4,408 in windows would add nearly $3,800 in value when the home goes on the market.
The GreenSavers difference
From start to finish, Courtney was impressed with the process: “Your crews were professional. Communication was solid. It just felt easy.”
This project is a great example of why homeowners are choosing GreenSavers: thoughtful planning, skilled crews, and results that speak for themselves. Courtney loved working with us on the project so much that she is now an employee!
